In the late 2010s, Nike released a series of classy lifestyle sneakers inspired by Y2K-era running shoes as their retro look was part of a growing fashion trend. Following the success of silhouettes like the P-6000 and Vomero 5, the brand produced another nostalgic model in 2023 known as the Nike V2K Run.

When the shoe was first revealed by fashion magazines, it was called the Runtekk, but by the summer, this name had changed to the V2K Run to reflect the various inspirations behind its nostalgic look. The “V” referred to the Vomero 5, which informed aesthetic elements like the structural sidewall overlays, and the “2K” pointed to the influence of early 2000s athletic footwear. Lastly, the word “Run” was a nod to the sporting heritage of the shoes it was based on.

The Nike V2K Run was designed with comfort and style in mind, featuring a sole unit of soft Cushlon foam whose exaggerated heel incorporated a firmer cushioning material for excellent support and a bold, elevated appearance. Meanwhile, the upper was made from a layer of breathable mesh and covered in synthetic leather panelling for comfort, durability and retro appeal.

On its release in the summer of 2023, the V2K Run was an instant success, particularly because it was widely shared on social media. By the following year, it had become a must-have lifestyle sneaker as fashion influencers and celebrities were repeatedly seen wearing the shoe. With its popularity growing, Nike added a GORE-TEX version that could be worn comfortably through the winter.
