In the 2020s, On expanded its collection of high-tech running shoes with a series of silhouettes incorporating new versions of its trademark CloudTec cushioning. One of the most eye-catching of these models is the Cloudeclipse, which is supported by the brand’s most stacked midsole to date.

The sole unit of the On Cloudeclipse is as tall as it can be while still remaining within World Athletics’ 40mm limit. It features the latest CloudTec Phase cushioning – an advanced technology consisting of hollow, oblong-shaped tubes that collapse in on each other in a smooth sequence from heel to toe, absorbing impacts and carefully transferring the runner’s weight as they go. Developed using a computer-generation technique known as Finite Element Analysis, this system is optimised to provide a seamless transition through the foot, while the use of ultra-soft Helion superfoam delivers excellent protection and support over long distances. An X-shaped nylon Speedboard balances out the plushness of the foam, bringing stability, control and responsiveness while also guiding the runner propulsively through each stride. Meanwhile, the outsole is made from incredibly durable rubber, with diamond-shaped grip patterns and angular flex grooves to produce reliable traction and facilitate confident movement, even in wet conditions.

The engineered mesh upper of the Cloudeclipse supports the foot in a number of ways. It is soft and flexible, so it moulds comfortably around the foot, and the integrated tongue is fully gusseted to lock the foot firmly in place. The secure lacing system enhances this effect with its cord-like eyelets, as does the branded tongue patch, which offers additional loops along its entire length. Meanwhile, the supportive yet flexible heel counter improves lockdown even further, making the shoe far more stable. A double layer of mesh gives the upper surprising durability, especially across the forefoot, where strategically placed functional embroidery delivers extra protection. Large ventilation holes appear across the toe and flanks, ensuring that the foot remains cool and comfortable throughout each run.

Aesthetically, the On Cloudeclipse balances its exaggerated, striking sole with an elegantly stylish upper for a powerful look. Reflective logos accent the heel and flanks, while dynamic lines decorate the forefoot, their angular design matching the bold X-shape of the Speedboard visible through the centre of the outsole. On top of this, the shoe is highly sustainable as its upper is made from recycled fabrics and dyed using a modern technique that consumes significantly less water than traditional methods.
