The Cloud is the signature series from Swiss footwear brand On. Its design is founded upon CloudTec cushioning – an innovative technology that gives the feeling of walking on soft, puffy clouds. This is the bedrock of On’s 2022 release: the Cloud 5.

A lightweight, breathable antimicrobial mesh made from recycled fabrics forms the upper of the On Cloud 5. Synthetic panelling seamlessly reinforces key areas of the forefoot, while an overlay with angular edges encompasses the midfoot and wraps around the heel. The tongue contains lines of perforations for added ventilation, and the heel has been carefully moulded into a shape that hugs and secures the foot. Aesthetically, it has a sporty, minimalist look, with subtle branding on the flanks and tongue for stylistic versatility.

Ease of use is fundamental to the Cloud 5. Its speed-lacing system features stretchy, non-tie laces that allow the sneaker to be quickly slipped on and off. Once the foot is in place, the laces instantly pop back, giving firm lockdown. And for those who prefer the traditional method, the shoe comes with a standard pair of laces as well.

The sole unit of the On Cloud 5 has the brand’s trademark look, with a CloudTec cushioning system, plush Zero-Gravity foam and an upgraded Speedboard that together offer a powerful combination of comfort, impact protection and responsiveness. The multidirectional nature of the cushioning also makes the sole incredibly adaptive so that it works with the specific movements of the individual wearer to produce excellent mobility. The outsole then delivers solid traction while building on the shoe’s remarkable flexibility via a set of deep flex grooves.

Since its 2022 release, the Cloud 5 has become widely popular, and several variants have been added to the collection. The travel-ready Coast has a well-ventilated featherweight upper that can be conveniently folded down when packing, while its no-slip kick-down heel makes it even easier to get on and off. The Waterproof edition features a breathable membrane that keeps water out, a more stable midsole, a convenient heel pull tab and reflective elements for extra visibility. The athletic upper of the Push variant gives a more secure fit and its tongue is made from an elastic mesh fabric that facilitates free and easy movement. The Combo and Terry alter the shoe’s material composition, the former introducing a two-tone woven outer and the latter going for a cotton-mix upper, faux leather panelling and a beautifully soft terry cloth fabric on the tongue.
