Waffle Debut

Nike’s Waffle sole is one of its oldest innovations, but the innovative feature continues to grace many of the brand’s sneakers to this day. Vintage in its looks, this familiar outsole always brings retro appeal to whatever shoe it appears on, including the Nike Waffle Debut: a modern lifestyle silhouette with a heritage aesthetic.

The upper of the Waffle Debut brings together soft nylon with plush suede overlays and enlarged leather swooshes in a style reminiscent of the brand’s 70s running shoes. Its exaggerated sidewall logos reach towards the back of the foot, where their tails are connected by a single strip of leather that floats above the Nike-branded heel tab for a distinctive look. Meanwhile, behind the patch at the top of the tongue is a layer of exposed foam which adds an offbeat touch to the design.

A thick wedge of bouncy foam has been used to form the midsole, which swoops in a smooth curve towards the toe, supporting the whole length of the foot as it goes. Along with the so-called ‘comfort insole’, this delivers a plush feeling underfoot.

Appearing over each end of the midsole is part of the classic Waffle outsole. This stretches across the bottom of the shoe from heel to toe in one continuous piece, its square-shaped traction pads arranged in rows for excellent grip. In the midfoot, there is a panel which has either Nike branding or the date 1972 etched into it, depending on the model, the latter being the year Bill Bowerman first implemented his innovative outsole design.
