Nike’s concept of innovation has moved away from performance and towards the more globally pressing issue of sustainability. Symbolised by the fact that the shoe is made up of 40+% recycled materials.

The 2021 version honours the 2020 one in its continuous drive towards sustainability with advanced Flyknit tech and high performance VaporMax technology. Yet, the primary change comes in the lacing department: the Nike VaporMax 2021 favours standard laces, as opposed to FlyEase on the 2020 edition.

Meanwhile, the main features have seen significant improvements. Originally designed for performance running, the VaporMax’s two Air units are formed in separate pieces, which provides more Air underfoot than ever before and is made with about 50% recycled materials. They attach to an outsole that incorporates Nike Grind (another Nike tech incorporating recycled materials) to maintain the shoe’s grip on any surface. The Air unit connects via bolstered recycled TPU clips to the super-stretchy, post-industrial recycled Flyknit upper. This lightweight innovation now features a soft collar that sculpts your ankle and has been adorned with stitched-on midfoot swooshes for stylistic verve.
