The Nike Metcon is a versatile workout shoe made for athletes who like blended exercise routines such as CrossFit or HIIT. Over the years since it was first created, the brand has evolved its design to the point where every single aspect has a specific function. In 2022, this progression reached new heights on the Nike Metcon 8, which introduced several upgraded features to the trusted silhouette.

Like its predecessor, the Metcon 8 is founded upon a React foam midsole that is both soft enough to be comfortable and firm enough to support varied workouts. It even offers a bit of responsiveness for short bursts of cardio, though the sturdy heel makes it unconducive to long runs. Instead, this structure is wide and flat with a rigid inner plate that distributes weight evenly over the entire heel and a specialised handstand clip around the back. Allied with the shoe’s low profile, this stabilising design makes it ideal for weightlifting and wall exercises, while it still retains enough flexibility for more dynamic activities. These attributes are further enhanced by the  outsole, whose grippy rubber surface incorporates flex grooves and extends over the sides of the midfoot to protect the flanks during rope climbs and lateral movements.

The upper is made from a lightweight mesh that is highly breathable. Synthetic overlays have been applied to those areas that undergo the most strain during exercise, which ensures high levels of durability and helps the shoe maintain its form-fitting shape over time. A new, Velcro-fastened tab has been added to the tongue, its hook-and-loop closure system conveniently keeping the laces out of the way during workouts. Overall, the exceptional lockdown provided by the Metcon 8 gives the athlete the reliable fit they need to confidently perform a range of exercises.

When it came out in 2022, Nike released a wide range of colourways, from classy, neutral-toned designs to more vibrant and eye-catching ones. Each has stylishly minimal branding, including a lateral swoosh and Metcon lettering on the medial flank. The lateral heel displays the words “Engineered to the exact specifications of championship athletes”, which gives a nod to the links between professional sporting competitions and the Nike Metcon 8. In fact, as with previous editions, the brand produced a Player Exclusive model for five-time CrossFit Games champion Mat Fraser, covering it in striking signature details.
