Alphafly 3
Ever since the first Alphafly helped Eliud Kipchoge break the 2-hour marathon barrier in 2019, Nike has been on a mission to create the very best long-distance running shoe. In 2023, distance runner Kelvin Kiptum set a world record at the Chicago Marathon in a prototype called the Nike Dev 163. This advanced design was the precursor to a cutting-edge piece of athletic footwear: the Nike Alphafly 3.
Kiptum’s record-breaking run was part of a year-long process that saw the Alphafly 3 tested more than any other Nike running shoe. Trialled by both elite and amateur athletes from all over the world, worn on different types of terrain and in varying weather conditions, put through its paces in the Nike Sport Research Lab and in professional road running competitions, this remarkable shoe has been so well optimised that it outperforms all its predecessors.
The technologies in the Alphafly 3 have been carefully put together to form Nike’s so-called “system of speed”. This proprietary blend balances speed, support and durability via three key features: dual forefoot Zoom Air units that deliver shock absorption and energy return, a one-piece ZoomX foam midsole for durable, lightweight comfort and a smooth transition through the foot, and a full-length carbon fibre Flyplate with a wide midfoot to offer unrivalled stability and reduce leg fatigue.
Nike has also made several small changes to the Alphafly 3 that have had a great effect on its overall performance. A new type of outsole known as Fast Shot provides exceptional lightweight traction, an updated last design combined with a moulded sock liner both reduces rubbing and increases arch support, and elevated Flyknit heel pods pad out the back of the foot while protecting the Achilles.
The Atomknit 3.0 upper also brings something new to the design, facilitating maximum breathability and giving excellent lockdown. It has been manufactured using extremely lightweight Flyknit yarns, and its updated lacing system reduces pressure from a set of notched laces that allow athletes to run without the worry of them coming loose.
When it debuted in the elegant Prototype colourway in January 2024, the Nike Alphafly 3 was lighter and more technologically advanced than any other in the series. Whether attempting a 5K or a full marathon, it pushes runners to greater levels of success, making the Alphafly 3 one of the best running shoes available.
