The iconic New Balance 990 series was launched in 1982 when the company produced what at the time was marketed as the most technologically sophisticated running shoe around. In 2012, the brand celebrated the 30th anniversary of this momentous occasion by releasing the 990v3 – an updated version of the original with brand new components and its own distinctive aesthetic.

On the upper, the rounded suede overlays reveal even more of the mesh underlayer than the first two iterations of the 990, allowing increased ventilation across the foot, while the padded tongue has a textured surface that displays eye-catching branding. However, the sole unit is where the main technological changes come in, with upgrades to both the outsole and the midsole that improve durability and comfort.

A hard-wearing Ndurance rubber has been applied across the high-use areas of the outsole, whose tread patterns have been reworked with geometric diamond shapes for excellent traction. New Balance’s ENCAP midsole incorporates a tough polyurethane frame with soft foam in the middle to deliver structural integrity together with soft support. Lastly, a carbon fibre shank has been inserted beneath the arch of the foot to ensure that it is well-protected during vigorous activity.

This powerful combination of features has seen the New Balance 990v3 lauded as one of the most comfortable in the series, while its nostalgic aesthetic and expertly crafted outer makes it a stylish option for everyday wear.
