The rebellious appearance of this Jordan 1 High x Off-White™ sneaker exemplifies the inventive creativity of designer Virgil Abloh, who worked with Jordan Brand to construct it. Simply nicknamed White for its monochromatic colour scheme, this understated moniker belies the many eye-catching elements to be found across it. Beginning underfoot, the white rubber outsole has been built with a variety of tread patterns, from star-shaped ones on the toe through circular ones in the forefoot to lugs below the heel. Meanwhile, the Air-filled midsole has a slightly off-white tinge to it so that the large black Air text on the lateral heel is clearly visible on its surface, highlighting the use of soft cushioning within.

Above this, the upper has been deconstructed in a way that only Abloh could conceive. The base layer is a thin white mesh that wraps around the high-cut collar, stretches over the lateral midfoot and moves through the toe box. White leather panels have been placed over this to form the forefoot mudguard and the pair of overlays behind it, as well as the eyestay and the collar wrap. The medial sidewall differs from the lateral one in that it is covered in a layer of this premium leather. As it extends around the heel, this changes to a more beige-coloured suede, which has been shaped into a three-pronged panel on the lateral side of the heel. Further up, the collar wrap has been left unattached apart from at the bottom so it floats over the ankle. It can be held down by threading the white laces through its eyelets, as can the two overlays at the bottom of the eyestay, which also have unsewn parts along their upper edges.

Elsewhere, the white tongue has had its label shifted over to the lateral side, its surface embroidered with orange Nike Air branding. At the top, both the collar and the tongue have exposed foam. Then, the pristine white tones found on the rest of the shoe continue down the inner walls and across the insole, only the black Nike Air text and swoosh on the latter feature deviating from this colour. Back on the outer, a pair of Jordan Wings appears subtly on the lateral collar as it has been pressed into the white material with no tonal adjustment.

In a further deconstruction of the classic Air Jordan 1, Abloh has added black Helvetica text to the laces and the medial flank. The former are decorated with the word “Shoelaces”, while the latter has four lines of writing that mention both brands, Nike’s Beaverton headquarters, the name of the shoe and the year 1985, which is when the first AJ1 model was released. While this lettering remains unobstructed by the usual swoosh, a white leather Nike logo has been lightly attached to the lateral sidewall using a minimal amount of vibrant blue thread at each end. The rest is left hanging over the outer, while a bright orange tag emerges from beneath the tail, just below the blue stitching, for a radiant flash of contrasting colours. In typical Abloh fashion, a pale blue zip-tie has been attached to the laces, thus rounding off this wonderfully innovative sneaker.
